Worship at home on Maundy Thursday

Welcome to this service for use at home on Maundy Thursday.  You may like to place in front of you a bowl and towel and may be also a cup/glass and some bread.  As usual where possible the songs/hymn links chosen from YouTube are those which show lyrics so that you are able to join in.

Opening prayer:  Heavenly Father as we reflect on the washing by Jesus of the feet of the disciples and of the Passover Meal Jesus shared with them help this to be a reminder for us of what true service entails and the cost true love may require. Amen.

Reading:  Please find a bible and read John 13:1-17.  You may want to spend a few minutes thinking about the scene described by the reading.  Mark will focus his message on verses 1-7 as Jesus speaks to his disciples about servant leadership.

Song: “You laid aside your majesty” Here is a link:

Song:  “How deep the Father’s love for us”.  Here is the link

Prayers:  Take a moment to think of how you treat others and how Jesus treated them. You may wish to focus on the towel and bowl of water at this point.  In particular if you operate in any leadership capacity consider your attitude in your role.  Remember all who lead today. Pray in particular for wisdom those who lead today in the light of Corona virus.

You may wish to pray the Lord’s prayer at this point which may be followed for the special prayer for the day (the collect) which is as follows:

God our Father,

you have invited us to share in the supper
which your Son gave to his Church
to proclaim his death until he comes:
may he nourish us by his presence,
and unite us in his love;
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.  Amen

The Lord’s Supper:  To consider the second thing that we recall on this day which is the eating by Jesus of a last meal with his disciples.  You may wish to read Matthew 26:17-30.  Take a moment to reflect on the love Jesus showed as he consciously made the every day cup of wine and plate of bread symbols of what would shortly take place. You may wish to have a cup and some bread in front of you at this point.  If you would like to share in a communion service there is one on the church’s YouTube channel.  Here is the link:

Closing hymn:  Our service concludes with the hymn “Amazing Grace”.  Here is a link: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jbe7OruLk8I

A closing prayer:
Lord Jesus Christ,
you humbled yourself in taking the form of a servant,
and in obedience died on the cross for our salvation:
give us the mind to follow you
and to proclaim you as Lord and King,
to the glory of God the Father.  Amen.
